Audition - dir Takashi Miike

I saw this last night and I was really impressed. It's initially quite slow, but it really builds up the atmosphere as the film progresses. The plot is very simple: man loses his wife to illness, decides to remarry, meets woman, is smitten. But is she all she seems to be?

The thing that makes this film stand out for me is the visual imagery -- it reminded me somewhat of Francis Bacon's paintings, and also a little bit of the darker parts of Twin Peaks. The last scenes are truly shocking (and I say that as someone who likes horror films) and really quite hard to watch. I won't say what happens, but the film is really not for the squeamish.
